Karpathos Town or Pigadia is the capital and main port of Karpathos island. Located on the southeastern side of the island it is built in the same location as the ancient city of Poseidio. It is the largest settlement on the island presently inhabited by about 2500 people most of whom are engaged in tourism, agriculture and fishing. The city is built on the edge of the bay Vrontis a sandy beach 4 km where you can swim or do water sports.
Pigadia consist the centre of tourist life in Karpathos. It’s a modern town, visitors will find all the public services of the Island as well as plenty of local shops, bars and restaurants. It is the most organized area of the island, while on a short distance from the city there are exotic and organized beaches like Kyra Panagia , Agios Nikolaos and Ammoopi.
While enjoying the sights and flavors of an authentic Aegean island visitors during their stay can see the remains of an early Christian church of Agia Fotini at " Afoti " beach. Some other interesting sightseeing’s are the Acropolis of ancient Posidio while it is worth visiting the newly renovated historic square in front of the building of the Province of Karpathos. Moreover, the visitor can attend many cultural events in the newly-built open theatre of the town which is situated near the Italian building of the Province of Karpathos and Kasos and enjoy the magnificent view to the sea.
